Virtual Library Orientation for New BML Faculty, Staff and Students

In-Library Use of Special Materials

Dissertations, student reports, current journals, most reference books, and special collections may not leave the library. Photocopies may be made in accordance with copyright guidelines.

How To Check Out Materials From the Cadet Hand Library

NOTE: UC library cards are not required within the Cadet Hand Library. Check out of materials is manual, and on the honor system. Although there are no formal due dates, we request that you return all items as soon as you no longer have a need for them.

  1. Use computer lab, library, or other computers to access the Cadet Hand Library catalogs and identify call number locations of your desired items.
  2. Remove the check-out cards, usually located in a card pocket inside the back cover of books. (If no card is present, please make a temporary one from note paper available on the circulation counter.)
  3. Write today's date, including the year, and your name on the next available line.
  4. Place the card in the circulation counter tray near the library exit.
  5. Keep all library materials on the BML campus, unless special arrangements have been made with library staff.

For special arrangements and questions, contact library staff at [email protected].

How To Obtain a UC Davis Library Card

UCD FACULTY & STAFF: your UCD employee ID serves also as your library card. Registration for library privileges will activate the barcode. If you have not done this on campus, contact BML library staff for help with the process.

UCD STUDENTS: your student ID serves as your library card after you activate your barcode.

VISITING RESEARCHERS & STUDENTS FROM OUTSIDE UCD: please see library staff for a brief orientation.

How to connect to UC Davis Library Resources from off site

When offsite and off Campus/BML, you must use the UCD VPN (virtual private network) to access to UC Davis electronic catalogs, databases, and journals. Please see the University Library website for instructions on how to install the VPN client for your operating system.

How To Request Books and Journal Articles From UC Davis and Other UC Campuses

There is an integrated catalog for all of the campus libraries of the UC, and one search box for library holdings in many media. This UCD portal provides searching guidance and an opportunity to request resources through an automated document delivery and interlibrary loan system.

Please note that:

  • Authenticating through the UCD CAS process is required. (When away from UC, use of the VPN is necessary.)
  • Journal articles and book chapters will be transmitted electronically to the requestor, who must agree first to copyright guidelines.
  • The correct pick-up location is Shields Library. Only after being notified that the requested item is being held there, can the requester ask that the item be delivered to the Bodega Marine Laboratory.
  • Holdings of the CMSI’s Cadet Hand Library (located at the Bodega Marine Laboratory) are not included in the integrated UC catalog. They are listed on that department’s Quicklinks page.

The Bodega Marine Laboratory’s librarian is available to help! Come into the library, or email [email protected].

How to Recommend New Book Purchases for the BML Library

The library acquisitions budget is set up specifically to accommodate purchase requests that fall within collection guidelines. Suggestions are gratefully received by e-mail at [email protected], or by note, and in person.
