Creature Feature: Longfin Smelt
Join Karl Menard, Aquatic Resources Manager at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, for a behind-the-scenes look at efforts to support longfin smelt in captivity. This native California fish is anadromous—migrating between fresh and salt water—making its life cycle especially tricky to replicate.
Thanks to the combined resources of UC Davis and Bodega Marine Lab, researchers are working to “close the lifecycle loop” and better understand how to support each fish lifestage.
This project is led by Dr. Nann Fangue, whose lab’s research on the species’ physiological responses to environmental stressors is helping to inform conservation strategies across the region. This project is funded by the California Department of Water Resources.
