Katherine Pearson is a biology student who just finished at SRJC and is transferring to Cal Poly Humboldt in the fall semester of 2025. She is majoring in marine biology but hopes to major in biochemistry as well. She is also interested in getting certified in scientific diving so she can see kelp forests and their inhabitants up close. Her mentors were Maya Munstermann and Elena Wang.
I came into the Bodega Marine Laboratory summer program completing as a third year from Santa Rosa Junior College. I had applied the previous two years for this internship with no success, until this year.
As an intern at BML, I was involved with the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Project, which monitors the health of California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) with the help of volunteer anglers. My mentor Fran de Castro and her partner Jordan Colby help to manage the BML’s contributions to the program.
For over a decade, the SRJC-BML Internship Program has offered Santa Rosa Junior College students hands-on research opportunities at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory, connecting the JC students with UC Davis graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and staff mentors across a range of scientific fields.
Stephanie Arriaza is a student at Santa Rosa Junior College studying Environmental Studies with an interest in studying biology upon transferring to CSU. Stephanie worked in the White Abalone Culture Lab during a summer internship at BML.
Katrina Anderson is a fifth-year college student at the Santa Rosa Junior College working towards a master’s degree in zoology and environmental science. Last summer, she worked with Lily McIntire, a graduate student at San Diego State University, through the SRJC-BML Internship Program.
Sophia Chin's goal is to interweave natural science and visual art as a way to encourage climate activism. As an intern at Bodega Marine Lab, Sophia created animations and videos highlighting the work and research at the lab and surrounding reserve.
During my time spent at the Bodega Marine Lab, my primary goal was to become more familiar with fieldwork. I’m glad to say that not only did I achieve this goal but also developed a better understanding of land stewardship.
Natalie Kozlowsk, a third-year Santa Rosa Junior College student, spent last summer working with Keira Monuki, a 5th-year PhD candidate looking at how various populations of the marine snail Acanthinucella spirata that were captured have grown under controlled conditions as well as separate hot and cold treatments.
