Announcing Dr. Alyssa Griffin's appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Alyssa Griffin will start a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at UC Davis on July 1, 2022!
We welcome Dr. Griffin’s continued collaboration with the Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute as she transitions from being a Postdoctoral Fellow to an Assistant Professor, and hope that you will join us in congratulating Dr. Griffin and welcoming her to this new role.
About Dr. Griffin:
Dr. Griffin received her Ph.D. in Oceanography in 2020 from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. Since that time she has been a UC Davis Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the UC Davis Bodega Marine Laboratory and Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
Dr. Griffin’s research spans geochemistry, biomineralization, and climate change. Her research to date has focused on biomineralization and the marine carbon cycle, including projects related to mineral precipitation/dissolution dynamics under conditions of changing ocean chemistry, blue carbon (carbon storage in ocean systems) and climate mitigation strategies, the interactions of sediment biogeochemistry and carbonate mineralogy, and human relationships with earth systems. Dr. Griffin’s work also includes developing climate solutions that promote sustainability and environmental justice.
Dr. Griffin has an outstanding record of working to attract and support minoritized scientists and has received multiple awards for this work including a UC San Diego-wide Inclusive Excellence award, and she co-developed an initiative to increase diversity in the scientific diving program at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
