Their study systems are spread far and wide, from the inner delta to the coast and out into the open ocean, but their work is united in themes of change and community. Dr. John Durand, Dr. Hollis Jones, and Nicholas Trautman are all working to observe, understand, and apply science to a changing world.
Ocean temperature and salinity has been recorded daily at Bodega Marine Laboratory for over 50 years, and for a couple of decades additional data on winds, chlorophyll, weather and currents have been collected. BML is a leading member of the national Integrated Ocean Observing System, and the regional association Central and Northern California Ocean Observing System (CeNCOOS). Physical coastal oceanography research at BML focuses on ocean upwelling, land runoff, and the connections between coastal estuaries (both small and large) and the ocean.
